What are German Roaches?

German cockroaches are small indoor pests that can quickly multiply and spread throughout your home. They hide in kitchens, cabinets, and appliances, where they have easy access to food and water.

Beyond being unsettling to find in your home, they can contaminate food and surfaces, and their droppings and shed skins may trigger allergies or worsen asthma.

The sooner you address an infestation, the easier it can be to bring it under control.

Do you think you might have German roaches?

Maybe you’ve spotted a few tiny bugs crawling across your kitchen counter, noticed baby cockroaches in a cabinet, or started seeing them near your refrigerator or dishwasher.

Before you spend money on treatment, it’s important to know what you’re dealing with. German cockroaches are small, light brown or tan insects that commonly live and reproduce indoors, especially in kitchens and other areas where food, water, and warmth are available.

Here are a few telltale signs that can help you identify German cockroaches:

– Small size: German roaches are small, usually about ½ inch long.

– Light brown color: They’re usually tan or light brown, with two darker stripes just behind the head.

– Where you’re seeing them: German roaches are commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms.

– When you’re seeing them: You may notice them scurrying across the counter or floor when you turn on a light at night.

– How often you’re seeing them: Repeatedly seeing small roaches can be a sign that they’re reproducing inside your home.

How to tell the difference between German Roaches and other roaches?

German cockroaches are much smaller than the large roaches you may see outside, usually only about ½ inch long.

They’re light brown or tan, with two dark stripes behind the head, and are commonly found hiding in kitchens, cabinets, and appliances.

Larger roaches are often reddish-brown or dark in color and may wander inside from outdoors, while German roaches typically live and reproduce inside your home.

How to Prepare for a German Cockroach Treatment

A little preparation can make a big difference when treating German cockroaches. These pests hide in tight spaces around cabinets, appliances, and plumbing, so helping us access those areas allows us to treat the places where cockroaches are most likely to hide.

Before Your German Roach Treatment

Clean your kitchen

Wipe down countertops, stovetops, and sinks. Sweep or mop floors to remove crumbs, grease, and food residue.

Empty kitchen cabinets and drawers

Remove food, dishes, utensils, and small appliances from the upper and lower cabinets we need to treat. Place these items on a table or in sealed containers away from treatment areas.

Clear the top of your refrigerator

Remove items stored on top of the refrigerator. We may need to move the refrigerator to access areas where cockroaches hide behind or beneath it.

Empty the areas under sinks

Remove cleaning supplies, bags, and other stored items from beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks so we can access plumbing and other potential hiding places.

Protect food and pet items

Seal or remove exposed food, including open boxes and bags. Remove pet food and water bowls from treatment areas, and follow your technician’s instructions for protecting aquariums, bird cages, and other pet habitats.

If you have an aquarium near a treatment area, let us know before your appointment so we can provide appropriate precautions.

After Your German Roach Treatment

Avoid cleaning treated areas for at least 24 hours

Do not wipe down treated cabinet interiors, baseboards, or other treated surfaces during this period unless your technician gives you different instructions. Avoid disturbing bait placements and other treatment products.

Keep your kitchen clean

Continue wiping up crumbs and spills, keeping counters and floors as dry as possible, storing food in sealed containers, and taking out trash regularly. Reducing access to food and water helps support your treatment program.

Avoid using additional roach sprays

Do not apply store-bought sprays or foggers around treated areas unless your technician recommends it. Some products can interfere with bait treatments or make cockroach control more difficult.

Why Follow-Up Treatment Matters

German cockroaches reproduce quickly, and newly hatched cockroaches may appear after the initial treatment. That’s why follow-up visits are an important part of the treatment process.

We typically schedule a follow-up service approximately 10–14 days after the initial visit, depending on the treatment plan and conditions in your home. This allows us to check progress, address continuing activity, and determine whether additional treatment is needed.

Please plan to provide access for your scheduled follow-up. Completing the recommended visits and following the preparation instructions gives us a better opportunity to bring the infestation under control.

German Cockroach Treatment Cost

German Cockroach Treatment (up to 4 visits)

This is a multiple appointment treatment designed to completely eradicate German cockroach infestations. This treatment is far beyond our quarterly coverage and is needed when infestation is profound.

Regular Customers:

$300 for kitchen and $50 for each additional room.

Non-customers:

$350 for the kitchen and $50 for each additional room.

Why Does German Cockroach Treatment Cost More?

German cockroaches are much harder to eliminate than typical household pests. They reproduce quickly, hide in hard-to-reach places, and can continue breeding even after visible roaches are gone.

That’s why a single spray usually isn’t enough.

Our German cockroach treatment requires 3–4 visits to treat the infestation, monitor progress, and address remaining activity as needed.

The higher cost reflects the additional time, specialized treatments, and follow-up work required to get the problem under control.

Our goal isn’t just to kill the roaches you see, but to eliminate the infestation so you never see German Roaches again.

Frequently Asked Questions

German Cockroach Treatment FAQs

  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
How many treatments will I need?
Our German cockroach program is generally a 2–4 visit service. The number of visits and timing depend on the infestation and how it responds to treatment.
  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
How much does German cockroach treatment cost in San Marcos?
Kitchen treatment starts at $450, with an additional $50 for each additional room requiring treatment. Mobile homes have an additional $100 charge. We provide a free initial inspection to help assess the situation.

Why can't you just spray the kitchen once?
German cockroaches often hide in cabinets, appliance housings, and narrow cracks. A single application may kill some visible insects without adequately addressing hidden populations or developing nymphs. Follow-up visits allow us to evaluate activity and adjust the treatment plan.

Why am I seeing baby cockroaches?

Baby cockroaches, called nymphs, can indicate that cockroaches are reproducing nearby. Their presence is a useful reason to inspect the affected area. If you see nymphs during the treatment program, tell your technician.

Do I have to empty every kitchen cabinet?

Usually. You should empty the cabinets and drawers identified in your preparation instructions. Your technician will let you know which areas need to be accessible.

  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
Do I need to leave my home during treatment?

Not usually. Of course, it depends on the products and application methods used. Your technician will explain any required precautions, including whether you or your pets need to stay out of particular areas and when you may return.

Are German cockroaches a sign of a dirty home?

Not necessarily. German cockroaches can enter through grocery bags, deliveries, used furniture, appliances, and other belongings. Good sanitation helps reduce food and moisture sources, but an infestation is not proof that someone keeps a dirty home.

  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
Can German cockroaches come back after treatment?

They can be reintroduced through deliveries, belongings, or movement between connected living spaces. Good sanitation, continued monitoring, and addressing sources of reinfestation can help reduce the risk.

  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
What if I live in an apartment or multi-unit building?

German cockroaches can move between connected units through shared walls, plumbing openings, and other pathways. In some situations, coordination with property management or neighboring units may be necessary to insure a complete service.

  • image/svg+xmlimage/svg+xml
Is German cockroach treatment included in regular pest control?

German cockroach infestations require a dedicated specialty treatment program and are priced separately from routine pest control services.
