How Long Does It Take for Termites to Do Damage?

Hi, I’m Michael Flournoy, owner of Paladin Pest Control. With 22 years in the pest control industry, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly termites can turn your home into their personal buffet.

Many homeowners don’t realize they have a problem until the damage is extensive.

So, let’s talk about how fast termites work, how you can prevent them, and why professional help is critical in protecting your home.

How Fast Do Termites Cause Damage?

Termites are small but relentless. A single colony can contain hundreds of thousands—sometimes even millions—of termites.

Once they get inside your home, they don’t take days off. Under the right conditions, termites can cause noticeable damage in just a few months.

If a colony goes undetected for several years, they can compromise the structural integrity of your home, leading to costly repairs.

Subterranean termites, the most common type in Texas, work 24/7. In about six months, they can eat through a foot of a 2×4.

That might not seem fast, but imagine what a thriving colony can do over a few years.

Preventing Termite Infestations at Home

While no home is completely immune to termites, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk:

  1. Eliminate Moisture – Termites thrive in damp environments. Fix leaky pipes, ensure good drainage around your home, and keep gutters clear.
  2. Store Wood Away from the House – Firewood, mulch, and lumber piles should be kept at least 20 feet from your home and elevated off the ground.
  3. Reduce Soil-to-Wood Contact – Wooden structures, such as decks and fences, should have concrete or metal barriers between them and the soil.
  4. Inspect Regularly – Keep an eye out for mud tubes, discarded wings, and soft or hollow wood.
  5. Seal Cracks and Crevices – Close up any gaps around plumbing and wiring to limit termite access points.

Why Professional Help is Essential

Even with the best prevention methods, termites can still find a way inside. That’s where professionals like us come in.

At Paladin Pest Control, we use specialized treatments that eliminate termite colonies at their source, preventing further damage.

Our team knows exactly what to look for and how to stop an infestation before it gets out of hand.

DIY termite control is risky because these pests are experts at staying hidden, and over-the-counter treatments rarely reach the entire colony.

If you suspect termites or just want peace of mind, give us a call. We offer thorough inspections and customized treatment plans to protect your biggest investment.

Don’t wait until termites have already done damage. Let’s keep your home safe together!
